We're on the 10th and 11th floor of a corporate high rise on Poydras Ave., right near St. Charles. We have generators and tons of food and water. It is 5 of us total. I am not sure how the internet connection will be affected. I have a camera and my gun.

Sustained winds are 175, gusts to 215. The real danger is not the wind, though, it's the storm surge the wind will be pushing into the city from the Gulf through the lake. The city might never recover. Honestly, this thing could be biblical.

I'll try to keep you guys updated as events warrant.

what do they do with the zoo animals?????

oh fuck. i thought of the zoo animals before i thought of my own family who live in freaking trailers. i am so the worst sister in the world.

My aunt's brother works at the zoo, and apparently the higher-ups on the employee list are exempted from the "mandatory evacuation list." He's camping out in the upper-level of the Reptile House as we speak, actually. All animals have been brought inside for (relative) shelter.

Still, the last place I'd want to be right now is in a room with a bunch of deadly snakes.

yeah but what about the animals in the swamp exhibit and stuff? do they have facilities in place for safely storing them for a few days? and what if their habitat is destroyed? will they transport them to another zoo or something? i must know! :)

Hahaha, I'm not really sure about any of that. Maureen (my aunt) had said something about how they had a bunch of underground "bunkers" where they usually keep supplies, cages, sick animals-- and all those that could fit were transported down there.
