This blog was never intended to be some kind of springboard to fame. I had no idea it would be... well, be what it is now. It's nothing short of stunning. I am getting thousands of IMs per hour now. I cannot keep up with them all. Same thing with comments -- I try to scan them all, but I am struggling to stay on top of it. All of them are appreciated and all of them are morale boosters and all of them provide focus for us.

I understand that a lot of media want to discuss our situation and the situation in the city. If you are in the media and you want to contact me or any in Team SOTI here at Outpost Crystal, please get with Ezra Hodge -- he can be reached at ICQ: 91-664-906, or ehodge@intercosmos.com

He will be coordinating all that stuff. I'm trying to make myself available, but we have so much physical stuff to do in addition to holding down the internet and pulling security. This will expedite things I think.

Read that you wondered when Bell South was supposed to arrive.
All I can tell you is that they were dispatched today.

Keep on keeping on. A lot of people are rooting not only for you, but for the city of New Orleans too. (Not too mention the affected areas along the Gulf Coast.)

Be safe and God Bless...

Looks like hundreds of people consider you a hero. To me, you and your little company are racist self-righteous pricks playing survivalist fantasy games and hoarding critical supplies from a city in desperate need. What pisses me off even more is that you are doing this for an ISP, and act like it's more important to keep some company's server going than to have power for a hospital running short on everything.

In one of his posts, he referred to taking a router to the City to keep their systems up and running. Ever heard of critical infrastructure? Department of Homeland Security has a division devoted to nothing more than the protection of our nation's critical infrastructure. The ability for his clients to communicate, especially the City, is a large and vital need.

I imagine you guys will have publishers clawing for a book deal, probably a made-for-TV movie as well, once the dust settles. Except the news stations aren't giving us the full picture of what "chaos" entails. I wouldn't have considered the police capable of looting until after I read this journal. Chickens with their heads cut off, maybe, but looting with malicious intent?

The news media certainly isn't reporting that; understandably so, the last thing the people need to hear is that the city's primary source of order is contributing to the chaos.

We're all concerned for you (even the guy a few comments up, I'd bet), and you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Also, if I ever decide to finally do the whole "get my own domadain name" thing, I'm completely decided on what company I'd choose to go through.

Apologies if this is repeat information, but a little IRC Update for you guys:

This irc thing has blown up (over 550 people in #interdictor, and I count 450 in #interdictor-scanner).

#interdictor is now being used as a place to filter in news related to the issues down in NO. We are staying away from major news outlets, focusing mostly on independent or internet media if possible.

#interdictor-scanner is the same

#interdictor-digest is now being used as a read-only place for people to get occasional news/info updates

#interdictor-chat is now being used as a place for people to chat about whatever (though we ask that people avoid coming in with flamebait topics or to troll)

FEMA

2005-09-01 11:50 pm UTC (link)
I don't get it, while didn't FEMA drop food, water, etc in the most serious places? Lack of Chinooks because they're all in Afghanistan (Well, surely they could use other helicopters if need be too)? If anything, if that's the case, why can't FEMA give a straight answer? They just told a reporter that they just found out about the people in New Orleans and then said that they are getting food, water, etc. While reporters so far have been reporting that they haven't seen jack? Is all this doubletalk just not to worry folks anymore then they need be? I mean who wants to know that nothing's getting to you because you’re simply overwhelmed? The Red Cross, as I'm understands, and other people are simply waiting for FEMA to let them in the first place. It's not that there isn't food etc, we in Florida have sent plenty to our neighbors in the west. Or did they simply wait till they had National Guard on the scene first? I'm quiet aware the law that states that the US army isn't suppose to be used in civil times and thus the reason for the National Guard so the president doesn't have full control. It's the aid that really puzzles me, the Mississippi river is still there despite the floods and not in New Orleans being the worst case scenario. Anyway, any answers anybody? Maybe the Press just has it wrong, and the governments doing all it can under their noses. *shrugs* I'm not expert, but perhaps somebody could educate me? ^.^

From my limited experience w/ emergency services it could very well be that there are enough supplies, but the ground plan is being poorly thought/carried out by the Incident Commander. Another possibility is that confusion btwn Red Cross, FEMA and Nat.Guard is resulting in only certain areas getting any supplies at all due to poor communication. It's got to be insane down there.

Something Awful...in the White House
(Anonymous)
2005-09-01 11:52 pm UTC (link)
Just this morning, the President claimed that no one could have anticipated the levee breaches we've seen in New Orleans after Katrina hit. That's not leadership, that's an excuse. In fact, people have predicted this kind of disaster for many years, including President Bush's own FEMA in 2001, when they ranked hurricane flood damage to New Orleans among the three likeliest, most catastrophic disasters facing America. Instead, funding was significantly cut back, leaving key engineering projects on hold. Instead, this Administration focused on the war in Iraq, tax cuts, and private sector economic growth without asking the American people to make needed sacrifices for the good of the country. Again I ask you, where is the leadership?
