I'm Awake
Best night sleep I've had so far. Woke up without back pain for the first time since before this thing started. I've been sleeping on the carpet, and that's a very thin layer covering the hard concrete. It takes about 3 days to get accustomed to sleeping on concrete -- I know that from my my days of sleeping on asphalt when the army couldn't provide better. I need to perform personal hygiene in a little bit, but I wanted to check in first and let everyone know that Outpost Crystal is still a viable and functioning camp of civilization in the face of the lawless barbarian hordes who threaten at all times to turn what's left of New Orleans into the war of all against all. It's like Mogadishu out there, but we're in a fixed defensive position and prepared.

I've got some office maintenance stuff to do here before I clean up.

Back in a few.

Glad to read that you are awake.... hope you make it through another day without too much misery. The crisis appears to be deepening as the panic grows.

Just found your blog from an Atlanta radio station host's web site (Neal Boortz). Your story is incredible.

Keep up the good work. You and your team are in our prayers. And as un-Christian as it is to say, kick some ass today. If the homicidal buttheaded gangs try making their way toward you, take 'em out - take 'em all out. Godspeed, God bless, and good luck!

I found your blog on Boortz' site this morning also. I hope you guys stay safe (wish I could send you some ammo!!). I'm glad you are keeping everyone updated on what is actually going on in the city, not like the broadcast news reports. Hope the military can get everything under control there soon.

Stay Safe, from all of us in High Springs, FL

I just want to say you're doing a fantastic job here, I'm sure it would be easier not to keep updating and talking on the channel. On the other hand, outside contact is no doubt welcome.

I hope this all ends soon, so you can relax. You've earned any luxuries you've got, and a lot besides.

Good morning. :) Have you heard the news that everyone is being ordered out, and at some points, herded out of a lot of buildings by the "police" and evacuated? Oh, that, and they're shooting at Military Helicopters. I assume you're still staying put, just updating on what I've heard from NPR/BBC news.

The Louisiana coastline may have been so badly damaged by the hurricane because manmade engineering of the delta has led to erosion of natural defences, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The engineering of the last 100 years that has reworked the Mississippi delta with thousands of miles of levees and flood barriers to protect communities and aid navigation, has also disturbed natural barriers which traditionally prevented storm surges and protected against hurricanes, says the society.
Snip from Guardian UK:
Why city's defences were down
Cuts in spending to raise levees blamed on cost of war in Iraq

"Human activity, directly or indirectly, has caused 1,500 square miles of natural coastal barriers to be eroded in the past 50 years. Human activity has clearly been a significant factor in coastal Louisiana land losses, along with subsidence, saltwater intrusion, storm events, barrier island degradation, and relative sea level changes," the society said in a paper last year.

It warned that "New Orleans and surrounding areas would now experience the full force of hurricanes, including storm surges that top levee systems and cause severe flooding as well as high winds".

The damage done this time may be also linked to White House cuts in funding for hurricane defence to pay for homeland security terrorist defences.

It's amazing that you guys have been able to keep up so well in everything that is going on. Are you planning on leaving for the mandatory evacuation of the city?

I wish you all the best of luck in everything, and keep the news coming!
There is more valuable information here than a lot of what is being reported elsewhere.

Glad you're all well. I read news reports from several sites all day long but yours blog has the most information. I hope the troops arrive soon. I'm just down the street from the White House here at work, so maybe I could deliver a personal message? Loudly. With a bullhorn?

Keep safe.

That was choice wording.
From the national guard radio:
"I was trying to get confirmation that was the plan...(i heard) there may be an evacuation....for other than evacuees."

There have been rumblings about evacuating the national guard. "We are safe...we are not evacuating."
