Getting Some Rest
It's been a very long day. I'm going to crash for a bit and try to get 5 hours or so of sleep. I apologize again that I cannot respond to each IM. I am trying. We've got that IRC channel going and I'll try to get in there for a while later in the day.

I am going to debrief the police officer completely in the morning. He was utterly fatigued, thirsty, and wanted to find out what the hell was really going on.

Security has become a major concern now, because the NOPD is ineffective and the looters terrorists are roaming the streets. Word is now that they're lighting buildings on fire, but I can't confirm that. Anyway, we have to run guard shifts and patrol and it limits our downtime.

It is a zoo out there though, make no mistake. It's the wild kingdom. It's Lord of the Flies. That doesn't mean there's murder on every street corner. But what it does mean is that the rule of law has collapsed, that there is no order, and that property rights cannot and are not being enforced. Anyone who is on the streets is in immediate danger of being robbed and killed. It's that bad.

I will be back on around 0700 or so I think.

Team SOTI signing off. Will leave the cam on.

Best wishes to all of you. You are doing a great service to those seeking info on the situation in NO, and hopefully decision makers will read this and take appropriate action.

As a resident of the Southwest US I'm doing what I can. Sending money to a charity helping the victims, and e-mailing my friends to do likewise.

I'm also forwarding your link to those interested in this tragedy.

I learned about you from www.irishtrojan.com, and I leanred of that blog from www.hughhewitt.com

Why is it, that at the first sign of the police force going down, or people not being watched, people turn into fucking animals? Lord of the Flies was understandable, they were kids, they had no supervision, but they at least tried to make their situation better before trying to kill each other.

We are meant to be adults, this is a crisis, people should be helping each other instead of burning buildings down. Property rights should not need to be enforced. Looting food is forgivable, but stealing TV's and burning down houses is just making life harder for everyone.

Anyway, thanks for keeping a level head through all this.

i'm just picking up on this journal now (for some reason) and I read everything from the beginning of the hurricane up until here. Truly the most comprehensive coverage I've seen so far, unbelievable to read, completely compelling, and all those other things I'm sure have been spewed forth in a million comments before mine.
It was heartbreaking to read the reports that "nola will be fine as long as there's no flooding" right after the storm and knowing the reality that would follow those hopeful statements.

Anyway, just one more well wishing and expression of gratitude and amazement at the dedication shown in this journal. While news stations are out there interviewing victims as they wade out of toxic waters and acting giddy at the prospect of more devastation, or movie stars are complaining that their made for TV flicks shooting schedules are delayed by the loss of millions of people's homes and many lives, it's good to have people who can give a purer outlook on the situation, and while they're at it, hope.

This is what blogs are all about. You're seeing it and saying it as it is without any of the filters that the news organizations have to deal with. I hope you, your connection and your servers make it through this situation unscathed. How come I'm thinking all we need now to complete the picture are some zombies walking the streets?

I'm feeling the same.

Thank you, interdictor, for posting. My sister is a Tulane Med student, and even though she's safe in Atlanta, we're eager for any news.

I don't know if you're willing or able to answer questions, but if you have any news about looting, etc, at the independent commercial district on Oak St near Carrollton, I'd be grateful. There's a comic shop and a deli there I adore.

God/ess Bless You and Yours.

You probably want to see this. http://www.digitalglobe.com/images/katrina/new_orleans_msi_aug31_2005_dg.jpg

Should give you an idea of what is dry, what isn't. The amazing thing I see in this photo is that it looks like if people without the resources to stay could just get to the MS River levees on both sides, they would be fine.

It is amazing that so many people who need to leave are looting, driving around and walking around when it is so easy for them to leave or at least get to a place where the Coast Guard could pick them up. But for the other people trapped deep in the flooded areas, it is another matter.

As a resident of North CA, I'm no stranger to the whole mob rule thing. After all, what do people do here if the Raiders lose at the superbowl? (And even scarier, what do they do when they WIN at the superbowl.) It's big, scary, and makes you think about every possible thing that could go wrong.
The only thing that keeps you from going bugshit? Having a sense of humor.
I know, sounds horrible. After all, with all the pain, death, and destruction, not much to laugh about. But it does help. Gets some pressure off those overactive adrenal glands, keeps your mind from wandering to worst-case scenarios.
I therefor offer you this. It's not a great joke, or a masterful joke, but see who breaks into wild laughter when you tell it. Helped me to get through bad patches when some family passed. So, enjoy.

Horse walks into a bar and says "hey" (hay).
