Food in the Quarter

According to Yahoo, some places are open for business. From:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20050831/lf_afp/usweatherfood_050831004814

"Just off fabled Bourbon Street, The Oceana Grill beat the blackout with candles on tables and a makeshift, but mouthwatering, menu of gumbo, price 10 dollars, and Cajun-style barbecued shrimp, a steal at 15 bucks."

"Further down Bourbon Street, a bar called Tricon House flogged off bottles of Budweiser and water for three dollars and cigarettes for five."

Those price gougers! You can't be charging $3 for a little dinky bottle of water! We must fine them for their inhumanity! Or something!

You have the page labelled DirectNIC vs Looters, and while there was alot of that going on, I couldn't help but see it as also photo evidence of some of the survivors that are out there. Anyone got any ideas on where this could be cross-posted for those outside of NO wondering if their family/friends are safe/alive?

Also, those are some high-res pictures you have there. I won't be surprised if some of them are grabbed by media sources, now that this journal is becoming so well known.

For some reason, looting is more compelling to most of Interdictor's readers than the survival of those left in New Orleans -- unless the survivors in question are in a high rise running voip, streaming video, and guarding teh internetz.

Here's a hint: Looting affects survivors. Looting means NO RATIONING.

You may almost have had a point there, but...

Looters = terrorists? You have officially gone completely sideways.

Nikes & DVD's = essential in rationing, how?

Originally from Houston I go to school in Tulsa. I hear they are starting to send people to tulsa. houston ISD opened its schools to relief victims. Our university is gathering students to help the Tulsa Red cross collect supplies to send down there. From what I understand we are going to be a millitia to all the stores here in tulsa, asking for donations for things that you all need. Let me know on my journal what you need.

I have a close friend who attends school here who's house is completely underwater, his grandmother and aunt are missing.

I can't imagine what it must be like there.

Let me know what we can do to help.

Needs

I went to the Houston Astrodome today as a volunteer. Extra large clothes for both men and women (2X, 3X, W22-24) are needed badly--shirts, blouses, shorts or light-weight pants. They also are badly in need of new underwear for men and women, boys, girls, all sizes. People have been provided with cots, but I heard several requesting air mattresses. They have plenty of diapers, water, blankets, smaller sizes of clothing, and food.

The Red Cross has done amazingly well in Houston. Conditions are bad in the Astrodome in that it is crowded, and loud, but these people were all in the Superdome, and are so happy to be out of that madness that they feel that their circumstances have improved considerably. They are gracious and kind, even in their exhausted state.

How many photos of license plates did you get? I wonder if once things are calmed down, the police will go through the effort of arresting the people who were caught on camera. Then again, NOPD might be too lazy and corrupt, and would prefer the whole thing be swept under the rug. (Excepting your friend who's taking shelter with you.)

Perhaps if you want to save power you should turn off that CRT monitor in the background of the webcam view that seems to be stuck on a screensaver bouncing a blue box up and down ;)

Actually, it's not racist ... it's the AP calling everyone in their photos looters and the AFP completely avoiding the word "looter".

Wow, that prove that the AP uses the term looting while foreign press uses the world finding.... how is that racist?

Have you looked through all the other AFP photos? Funny how all the pictures of black people are 'finding' things as well...

And guess what... all the Ap photos have people...'looting.'

You underlined the right differences... you just didn't understand them.

Hope this helps.

Cute background image you have there, blue smileys? :)

And is it fair to call them all looters? There's an old lady walking her dog -- how is she managing to do that, wearing her best Sunday dress, amidst the chaos? -- I doubt she's a looter.

Also this seems like a taboo subject, but damn, from the images and the news coverage one wonders if this catastrophe is actually happening in Africa. I know it isn't, it's just that the poor got left behind in this evacuation, and the truth is, it's mostly African-Americans that are poor.

They're not terrorists. Criminals, yes. Rioters, possibly. Assholes, absofuckinglutely. Terrorists, no.

It's already an overused word, let's save it for when we mean it.

The meaning of terrorists are people who use terror/fear in order to achieve political ends. Arsonists who burn for fun are not terrorists. They lack even the shield of purpose.

That's just criminal.

I steal 20 bucks, I'm a criminal. I blow up a bank to steal a million bucks, I'm a criminal. I light a fire downtown to create confusion so I can blow up a bank to steal a million bucks, I'm a criminal.

I'm a terrorist if I unertake destructive action to cause fear to make people listen to me. Ie. I light a fire downtown which destroys lots of property or kills people and then say: You do what I want or I'll kill/burn some more.

hey guys, hope everything is OK with ya's. I'm out in baton rouge and as we didn't get hit nearly as hard as you guys did we had some slight damages out here. Population has almost doubled overnight due to the amount of evacuees and rescue folks who have poured into town. 7 or so shelters have opened up in and around LSU. I know its nothing in comparison but figured I'd share what we got on our block.

Best of luck to you guys in this horrific tragedy. Hope you guys can remain safe
