Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Stuff
1) I need to get a counter going on this site. This is unbelievable! This was just a private little journal 3 days ago that I was using to share my hurricane experience with some friends -- like 30 people. Now it feels like the whole world is watching.

2) I also need to get an FAQ up and running. Never thought I would need an FAQ!

3) I am not giving specifics about the number of people here or our supplies or our weapons/ammo status or any other sensitive info like that which could pose a security risk. At this point, I think it's safer this way.

4) Feel free to use the comments to post information, links to emergency services and charities and the like, or anything else appropriate. You can use colorful language if you want -- I'm not some PC ninny, but I demand that you not say anything stupid. Stupidity is more offensive to me than synonyms for bowel movement.

5) We are feeling your love and support and we love all of you back!

Something else: A local company called us because they heard we still had the datacenter operating. They asked for our help. We went to their office and brought back their most critical server. We are in the process of transferring 40 gigs of data from their most critical server at this time. Of course we have no experience with Macs so this will be interesting. While at their facility we noticed that they had 5 drums of water with 5 gallons each. With their permission we took the 25 gallons of water and their cleaning supplies to our office.

We can’t help everyone. But, we are certainly willing to do what we can from here…

So no support for anti-"price-gouging" laws.

Gotcha.

Never thought I'd say the day where you say you love people. This is pretty hilarious.

I got this from [info]lkeele who lives in the NW corner of Louisiana - her husband teaches at Northwestern State University - some people have taken refuge on the schools campus:

A food bank in Louisiana is coordinating
all donations of food, clothing, and personal grooming items
(tootpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.) for my entire region. They
specify the best type of food to send is something that is ready to
eat, like canned chili. No microwave, no stovetop, usually. And, of
course, canned or boxed is better, and they won't accept anything
home-made.

Ship stuff here:

Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana
2307 Texas Avenue
Shreveport, LA 71103

You can phone them at 318-678-2400, or e-mail to info@foodbanknla.org

That's because the whole world (well okay, a sizeable chunk of LJ-scape) IS watching.

Dumb question, but what exactly does INTERNIC do?

I learned about your journal on CNN today. They showed some of your pictures and quoted your journal. They didn't say it was an LJ - they just called it "interdictor", so it took a little searching to find you.

I'm definitely watching. You guys be careful.

They didn't say it was an LJ

They did when I saw them mention it, somewhere around midafternoon. She zipped through the sentence real fast -- "it's a Live Journal with the name interdictor" -- it was easy to miss. You may have seen it at a different time, when LJ wasn't mentioned, though.

At any rate, I'm glad I heard about it and found it! Good luck to you and yours, interdictor.

Since you offered...

I wanted to plug pheresis. (I may have spelled this wrong.)

Basically, for the Red Cross, you can donate either whole blood, which can be done something like every six weeks and takes about an hour, or you can do pheresis, which takes two hours and can be done every three or so DAYS. Pheresis is extremely valuable, because it's a donation of a component of your blood, separated from the rest. Most often platelets, but sometimes white blood cells that stave off infection.

You get a needle in both arms, and you basically get to sit in a recliner and watch a movie while you give someone a life-saving gift.

Whether you do whole blood donation or pheresis, it's guaranteed to help someone, and it costs nothing. You even get free snacks afterward, and it's an opportunity to have your blood pressure and iron checked for free.

Visit www.redcross.org for more info, or Google your local Red Cross, which will probably be a faster site. The main Red Cross site seems to be really lagging, probably because of high traffic.

Thanks. :)

Funny, on Monday when I first got the video feed running in the evening, he was just taking it off the street view and I got the quick thong flash. Someone was playing around. But, I really wanted to see the street. Not complaining about the thong though.

I can't seem to get home in time to catch the street view. These posts have been great keeping me up on on the details though.

If you guys can cut your diesel with vegetable oil, you can make it last longer. I've never done it, but there are some (seemingly) good instructions here:

http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_make.html

If you guys can dig up any UPS's anywhere I'd definitely recommend it. I would also start to ration everything off... turn of non essential systems for a few hours late at night... things of that nature.

I also have a server on the west coast if you need anything hosted or mirrored. I've got oodles of bandwidth.

Good luck to you all and stay strong.

Ok, so now I think I'm signed up properly... I linked to this site from CNN. Wow! Nice work, and so much more accurate and less hyperbole than the news stations. Thanks, and please take care and keep the news coming. I'll stay tuned.
Also, I found a link to another blogger who was going to ride out the storm on S. Alexander St. There've been no entries on his blog since Sun. night.... any word on this area of town? Here's his blog address: http://michaelhoman.blogspot.com/

Let me know - and again, thanks and be careful....does your mother know what you're doing?!?!

It must be getting pretty out of hand to have that.

I wonder if rescues during the nighttime are even worth the risk.

Maybe they're going after the roving gangs.

I know it's minor and all, but I saw you playing around with lj layouts 20 minutes ago or so. Do you want userpics? Graphics? If I can offer a suggestion, I'd go for one of the lj layouts with a sidebar that will give links to all the posts, and to anywhere else you'd like to link to.

Hi White shirt and Blue shirt fellas! (from webcam)

Over here in the west we're praying for you and your team specifically. It's a very bizarre feeling being so far away from the south and feeling like there's nothing to do but give money to organizations and not specific items that folks like you need.

We hope you keep up your good spirits and that you all are safe.

You guys are like crack, I swear.

But I really have to go to bed. May the stars watch over you as you sleep, and may the fates keep you safe so that you can continue to entertain us all and feel our love in the morning.

(I agree with blacking out the windows. It'll be like moths to a porch light if you aren't careful. With so many people lacking basic amenities, they'd probably think nothing of harming/killing people to leech their newly-acquired electricity. I mean, some people shoot people for tennis shoes under ordinary conditions... much less these.)
