Info Update

Ok, we went down to the ground floors to lock down the building tight since a couple of people holed up with us took off. While we were down there we surveyed a huge area of the CBD.

Flooding in the CBD: Poydras is flooded from near the west side of the Superdome down to Baronne street. All of the side streets are flooded too down that way. Baronne is the last flooded street as you head to the river. Poydras is clear from Baronne to the river.

There is no water that we could see from Poydras to the interstate starting at Baronne and going all the way to the river. Headed toward Canal St. from Poydras, I saw no flooding at all from just past Baronne to the river. That's a huge area of the CBD without water on the streets. That's way better than the warnings we got.

Looting: The police are looting. This has been confirmed by several independent sources. Some of the looting might be "legitimate" in as much as that word has any meaning in this context. They have broken into ATMs and safes: confirmed. We have eyewitnesses to this. They have taken dozens of SUVs from dealerships ostensibly for official use. They have also looted gun stores and pawn shops for all the small arms, supposedly to prevent "criminals" from doing so. But who knows their true intentions. We have an inside source in the NOPD who says that command and control is in chaos. He reports that command lapses more than 24 hours between check-ins, and that most of the force are "like deer in the headlights." NOPD already had a reputation for corruption, but I am telling you now that the people we've been talking to say they are not recognizing the NOPD as a legitimate authority anymore, since cops have been seen looting in Walmarts and forcing people out of stores so they could back up SUVs and loot them. Don't shoot the messenger....

Personal: Securing a 27 floor high rise with no elevator support is not fun. I am totally worn out. I am gonna chill for an hour, eat dinner, then perform maintenance. But never fear, Outpost Crystal and Team SOTI have knuckled down and will never quit. Never. We are prepared to go all the way to see this thing through.

Thanks again for all the support and love. One day this will all be over and ancient history, but I'll never forget the kindness of strangers. Keep the less fortunate people in your thoughts and prayers.

FWIW, we're getting reports out here in the PNW that the police are requesting people voluntarily give up their weapons as they evacuate, as they have limited ammunition for their own guns. We're also getting reports that the police are clearing out anything valuable from stores like WalMart, then distributing them in an orderly manner to people coming in for goods (supposedly to prevent rioting that had been going on earlier). Dunno if it's true, but it's what we're being told.

Bullshit.
They just don't trust armed citizens, especially not desperate ones.
I'm going out tonight to buy lots of gas and ammo.

Warnings broadcast

Has anybody mentioned the warnings about carbon monoxide poisoning from indoor generator use?

Re: Warnings broadcast

If the generator was installed correctly, it'll be vented to the outside for both intake and exhaust air.

The few sites that I saw the generators at all had them on the outside, next to the building. However, this was in Phoenix, and most of the places were single floor. One sight had their generator off to the side of the loading dock in the basement, but it was vented out to open air.

Wish I could send you a sniper rifle

You might need it. I hope the news crews out there catch some of that on film but that's because I dig a little chaos.
Good Luck. I'll probably check out the web cam later on.

Re: Wish I could send you a sniper rifle

MSNBC have aired video of cops looting Walmart. One cop even called the reporter a looter.

Some of the stuff MSNBC has aired has been in very poor taste, do we need to see some asshole picking through the remains of some old couple's house? But I'm glad they outed the cops.

"Official Looting"

Some media outlets are saying that the "authorities" are going to places like Home Depot and commandering equipment for official use so I am hoping the Suburbans, at least, went in that direction.

I've been lurking for a while. Know my thoughts are with all of you. Keep Safe!!

Re: "Official Looting"

It's not really looting, it's the same thing that happens when a department takes over, say, a building across the street when there's a hostage situation. There's a law that protects it.

Wow, I can't believe that even police are looting. I hope they feel ashamed after all this is done.

You were featured on CNN again at about 5 est. It's funny how they don't mention these entries at all. They did say how you plan to stay this time.

They keep saying on the news that the NOPD can handle the situation so the National Guard is taking a backseat and letting them handle the looting.

During press conferences, a few reporters have been inquiring about bringing the military in to handle the situation...

I am amazed.

Just purchased a couple of domain names from you before I paid enough attention to realize you're in New Orleans. That's got to be a testament to smooth operations right there. I'm glad you're up and running, but for pete's sake, stay safe.

Giving blood and other things...

I posted on an earlier entry because my computer did something wonky... anyway, long story short...

I don't have money to spare right now, but is there anything else I can do? I have unlimited long distance, so if you need calls made, I'm happy to do that for you anytime, day or night.

As horrible as the situation is, what stories you'll have to tell your grandkids someday! You guys are banded together on that floor, but you're not alone... we're all thinking of you, and sharing your experiences as best we can. (Maybe even holding BMs in sympathy...?)

Best of luck. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

I have just started this list, but you may view it here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/katrinasurvivor/

What about the Garden District

We usually stay in the GD when we are there. I do a lot of historical research and I'm familiar with that area. I've not heard how it fared in all this.

Any words?

Only thing I have to offer is a report of a WalMart in the Lower Garden District being looted, with all guns taken.

Gotta odd little request for you. You've mentioned that there's PD upstairs- I'm from a forum that's got a couple NOPD guys on it. We're pretty scarce on giving out personal info on the forum, but if you get a spare moment (as if those are easy to come by, I'm sure), could you see if anybody up there's familiar with the Privateer Press forums, or know anybody on the force who's into Warmachine? We haven't heard from these two since the storm hit, so I was hoping I could give an 'all safe' to the guys and gals on the forum.

CNN, Fox News and everyone says there is no power, and ESPN said that they can't even get a hold of the Saints on their cell phones cuz all NO #'s are cut off. So i understand your on a generator but how are you getting the internet if everything is supposedly so busted down there?

[info]jecook

August 31 2005, 22:32:31 UTC 6 years ago

Presumably, their generator is powering their WAN links. I'm not sure what the Telco's setup is like down there, but I have a feeling it's similar. In a building of that size, IIRC the telco typically puts a mini-CO in place, which is run off the building's power taps.

Fiber only requires power to the transmitting and receiving ends, and any repeaters along the way.

And please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm more then happy to accept any corrections to my guesses.. :)

Now that you've been mentioned on CNN, I'm sure you're going to be inundated with new friends. Like ME!

I'm up here in Canada, visited NOLA for the first time last January and what I'm seeing is just ripping me apart. I haven't seen any regular TV since Sunday night.

I'm sure everybody has their own concerns with what's happening there but I'm thinking of the beautiful cemeteries. There's no way the St. Louis Cemeteries could have survived Katrina. At least I still have my pictures.

Any word on when you'll be getting out?
