3:30 Update
Ok, wind has died down significantly. Rain is minimal. It's still overcast, but the cloud cover isn't nearly as dark. By now, the news crews should be back out all over the city. I see a lot more pedestrians walking around and some civilians driving down Poydras, Camp, and St. Charles. Lots of reports of windows out in most high rises. Power loss is virtually total in the CBD, and water pressure is very low. I can only imagine what sanitation conditions will be over the next week -- or longer depending on Entergy. You never know what to expect from a company which has a government-mandated virtual monopoly. Some people are saying a month before power comes back. We've got 10 days or so of fuel for the generators. No word on when water will be back to normal. There's debris everywhere. Lots of damage.

Here's the good news: No flooding here in the CBD as far as we can see in any direction. No flooding means New Orleans has survived.

CNN might be linking to this blog today.

The governor is holding a live conference now, whatever good that will do. I imagine we're in for the reports of all the destruction and loss of life. Hopefully the people who stayed behind fared as well as we here at Directnic.com did. Let's hope the looting is nipped in the bud.

Cam will remain on for a while, and I'll be in and out on ICQ over the course of the day: 21710340. I need some food, some sleep, and to hear from my parents. Hopefully my apartment and my parents' house are both still intact.

Thanks to everyone who offered prayers, well wishes, and information during this ordeal. Let's just hope the people who didn't have the kind of comforts available to them that I had available to me are ok.

Buff

Not to downplay the level of destruction - this is bigger devestation than I have ever personally encountered, and I can't imagine what going a month without power would be like - but I can't help but imagine that the governer will do a song-and-dance to make the situation seem worse than however bad it actually is. After all, more disaster means more disaster relief.

I'm in London, first and foremost, so don't have full knowledge of what it's like on the ground for you all out there. It sounds though like you should start using your (miraculously) still functioning internet connection to start hunting down information on disaster-area survival, including water filtration and treatment, resource conservation, building emergency shelters. Make hardcopy if you can, as you said you may run out of power. It sounds like you, personaly, got off fairly light. You and the other people in this group should be proud that you've been keeping the information lines open.

Still though, while it's still about, collect rainwater (if for nothing else than using to flush the loo) and sleep in one room to conserve power and heat. If you have a fireplace, check it's okay to use with solid fuels like wood. I'm sure there's going to be plenty of that scattered about.

And people wonder why I think everyone should have an AWOL bag..

My best wishes and hopes go out to everyone in Katrinas path and wake. If the collective minds of the internet can help, just ask. There's a wealth of advice available, even if not physical help.

Some CNN anchorwoman was wearing a silly CNN cap yesterday during her report. What's up with that?

I have to ask you something. Do you think that these posts and the media re: the day after about New Orleans and the doomsday predictions that did not come to pass, are part of why everyone was caught by surprise when levees broke? At what point are YOU informed or told about the levees? You mentioned a press conference. AT what point do they say anything? I read a post where a councilmen was awaken on Tuesday and in shock.. Didn't officials state that it was a mess but that the worse had passed or something to that effect? I am trying to confirm the "feeling" that morning and the amount of damage that pales in contrast to the breached levees. I know you are busy, but I research stuff. It is what I do. And you are the best freaking source I have found. Also if I can be of any help in Florida for you let me know. Wish you had a phone. (sorry I am not a writer so I may jump around)
