Two police snipers just came into the building. I know m24s when I see them. That's very disconcerting. I guess they're preparing for the worst. At least it's good to know those kind of weapons are... available... if I need them.

Are you merely noticing/emphasizing the security/military preparations, or is there a high fraction of effort being spent on security vs. standard disaster recovery?

If so, is this due to availability of resources, or knowing something about people living in NOLA and them being particularly prone to looting/violence/etc. in a disaster.

If a natural disaster hit e.g. Idaho I don't think shooting looters or other criminals would be much of a concern.

Well I am noticing the stuff I'm noticing because they're coming into our building and using it as a staging area. This city is over 65%... Democrat, does that answer your question?

I guess this does bode well for the structural integrity of your building, and for the security situation locally.

I wonder how LA NG response will be affected by Iraq deployments.

How droll. But all the "commies" ended up being in the pseudo-bourgeois French Quarter, where they formed li'l tribes to help each other out, and (it seems) that the army wasn't needed there.

White trash travel to loot.
We've seen it here in the panhandle in neighborhoods with multimillion dollar homes.
They come by boat.
No shit.

People stupid enough to buy multimillion dollar homes in an area that will likely be in the path of a hurricane deserve what they get.

...which isn't much, depending on the quality of their insurance coverage.

people buy what they can afford.
people lose their homes many different ways.
and these are areas that have the roads closed following a hurricane until the power lines are fixed; the only way in is by boat. it has nothing to do with the amount of damage sustained by the structure.

do people stupid enough to build in the path of a tornado, mud slide, avalanche, forest fire, tsunami... get what they deserve?

We want these people to provide us with oil, minerals, fish, etc. (which is all I really care about from the southeast/gulf coast).

The people doing that should have good housing. They need to live in the area as a result.

Those people should be armed to defend themselves from the animals who come out after the disaster.

(same thing applies to oil workers in saudi arabia, etc; it's just a matter of scale)

What Malathion said. They have government flood insurance and probably subsidized insurance for everything else. Rebuilding will cost them about a dollar's worth of deductibles, probably.

Now that's not a bad idea...

Time to get my rowboat launched into the Ohio river... I should hit N.O. within a few days...

Yeah- the folks who live on the canals watch their back yards, not the fronts, of their homes.
