12:48p - Hosed
The St. Charles street car line is hosed. I counted 12 downed trees or poles across power lines and street car electicity. Downed wires everywhere. More debris covering the tracks than you can imagine. I bet it will be 2 to 4 months before that line is even close to being opened.

I cannot emphasize enough what a mess Uptown looks like. National Guard crews are out there trying to clean up some of it -- enough to make the streets passable.

It's one thing to see troops in the CBD, but it's bizarre seeing humvees and military trucks driving down the small streets Uptown. Even weirder seeing soldiers at various corners guarding that area with M16s (and M203s). I've never seen anything like it.

There is a military checkpoint on River Road at the Orleans/Jefferson Parish Line. That's something you don't see everyday.

Business owners/employees will be let into the city to retrieve vital assets/information starting this week, but can't stay past 6pm. Apparently you have to talk to some New Orleans [Department?] of Economics or something like that to get the permit. You must demonstrate that you have an important business (?) with critical components you must retrieve.

Our building got power right at noon central time and we had to manually reset the generator and get power to switch from the batteries to the city grid. That took about 5 minutes. Now we're running on Entergy power, which means... NO MORE DIESEL DUTY.

Let's see what else...

When I was on St. Charles by Audubon Park, Loyola and Tulane looked unscathed from the front. For those of you who know Loyola, I am happy to report that "Touchdown Jesus" is still signaling a score!

More to come.
