We're on the 10th and 11th floor of a corporate high rise on Poydras Ave., right near St. Charles. We have generators and tons of food and water. It is 5 of us total. I am not sure how the internet connection will be affected. I have a camera and my gun.

Sustained winds are 175, gusts to 215. The real danger is not the wind, though, it's the storm surge the wind will be pushing into the city from the Gulf through the lake. The city might never recover. Honestly, this thing could be biblical.

I'll try to keep you guys updated as events warrant.

Remember my survival post a while back?

My aunt's brother works at the zoo, and apparently the higher-ups on the employee list are exempted from the "mandatory evacuation list." He's camping out in the upper-level of the Reptile House as we speak, actually. All animals have been brought inside for (relative) shelter.

Still, the last place I'd want to be right now is in a room with a bunch of deadly snakes.

yeah but what about the animals in the swamp exhibit and stuff? do they have facilities in place for safely storing them for a few days? and what if their habitat is destroyed? will they transport them to another zoo or something? i must know! :)

Hahaha, I'm not really sure about any of that. Maureen (my aunt) had said something about how they had a bunch of underground "bunkers" where they usually keep supplies, cages, sick animals-- and all those that could fit were transported down there.

Be sure to write your SSN on your chest with a sharpe, preferably in black. That way when they find your decomposed body your family can get back your rotten remains.

Fuck that was mean. Seriously why they hell didn't you leave? In theory even after the storm has passed you'll have to wait for days if not weeks for the water to recede. And this won't be clean gulf water, it will be feted, polluted, icky water you can't drink.

What are you going to do for water? Do you have several weeks worth of water with you? You can always eat the weak members of your party you can't unpollute water unless you have some method of distilling it.

OK I'm done.

I'm a Green Beret. I could live on ants and bark for 6 years if I had to.

But why put yourself in the position where you have to?
You can't do anything during the actual storm.
Why not wait until it is over, and then go back in?

I laugh at the notion of "clean gulf water." What's worse is looking at where the drinking water comes from in that area.

He's a Green Beret (my dad's one too) up in a huge office building. A better wager would have been on an elderly black woman in a wheelchair at the convention center. Hey, if you're going to gamble, go up against some real odds.

You be careful. Remember a old life saving motto, "If you can't save yourself you shouldn't try to save someone else" or in short if it look like you yourself can not get through the problem then don't run out to get the other person, since you will only be adding to the death toll by one.

But your a smart man.. you seem to have your bases covered. Just be safe and keep us inform. PS: remember to vent the generator properly 2 people died because of not venting the exhaust properly.

Do you have a radio or anything? L-band satellite?

Telco COs will likely survive anything but flooding over the actual exchange (and in NOLA they probably designed for that), but I doubt cable infrastructure will.

My daughter is a student at Loyola NewOrleans and just got out of town. We rented her a car; she got the last one. I'm thrilled she's safe -- I mean, that's the only thing, right? Monday was supposed to be the first day of school.

Unfortunately, she just outfitted a house for the first time kinda with the last of her money. You know, the student's first house thing. Couches from Craig's List. First dining room set, stuff like that. She left it all. Everyone did, I'm sure. I feel for her, though. The school told them they all might have to go to another school for the semester. Jeez, you never think of this when you send your kid off to college. She's from California.
