N.O. police show off new crime-fighting equipment

by Walt Philbin, The Times-Picayune
Wednesday February 13, 2008, 6:28 AM

Mayor Ray Nagin and NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley try out a pair of the NOPD's new M-4 rifles Tuesday at the Superdome. Money from the state also provided 600 bullet-proof vests.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Police Superintendent Warren Riley on Tuesday used the floor of the Superdome to display more than $1 million in new armament and other equipment, largely for use by the SWAT squad in emergency and riot situations, including a fully equipped mobile command post, two armored cars and modern assault rifles.

Nearly all of the equipment was financed from a $6.6 million state allocation to New Orleans police that was earmarked for crime-fighting items or strategies, Riley said.

The city officials said the new equipment reflected a determination by the Police Department to root out and arrest criminals and make New Orleans safer, as well as to help police handle any emergency situation encountered.

The money will also pay for 600 bullet-proof vests.

The 27- and 14-ton armored cars, costing about $380,000 and $270,000 respectively, will provide cover to officers in SWAT situations and help them safely evacuate citizens from dangerous situations, Riley said.

The vehicles, Lenco Bear and BearCat models, will also enable SWAT officers and negotiators to get closer to barricaded suspects.

The city's police have never had a "state-of-the-art" command post for SWAT and other situations, the city officials said. The assistant commander of the SWAT team, Lt. Dwayne Scheurermann, vouched for the equipment and said the two armored cars come with features that "are extraordinarily helpful to us," such as winches to help knock or drag down walls and other barricades.

Nagin used the occasion to welcome the NBA All-Star game to New Orleans, scheduled for Sunday night at the New Orleans Arena. He said the annual clash between West and East All-Stars has "had a little bit of a rough time in other cities, but we are looking forward to it and don't expect any problems."

Riley pointed out that after this weekend members of the NOPD will have worked 12- or 16-hour shifts for 23 days -- nearly half of the first 48 days of the year -- to provide security for public events on a national stage, including college football's BCS championship game and Mardi Gras.

"We had a little break after Mardi Gras, but will go into that mode again Friday," Riley said. He said there will be so many police this weekend in the Central Business District and French Quarter "it will look like Christmas down there."

Oh Good Gods! What fuckwits! I love New Orleans, I'm going back in October, I hope to have a home there one day, but I loathe the city "leaders".

Right, what the cops really need are tanks. Just in case the roads to Dunkin Donuts are blocked off...

I'm in favor of giving more cops vests. Even giving them better guns. But I would cringe if I was a cop seeing my bosses acting like fools.

Oh, wait, they are fools.

And how much of that additional money is going to recruiting new officers, which would make more of a difference than them damned tanks?

One step away from permanent martial law.

Nothing like seeing cops recklessly pointing guns at each other to give you a sense of security.

Actually, that's the mayor recklessly pointing a rifle at a cop. Shows you just how little he respects firearms.

It's New Orleans though, I doubt he's ever had a hunters safety class. He probably learned everything he knows about firearms from TV.

4 Rules
[info]polyanarch
2008-02-13 08:10 pm UTC (link)
RULE 1:
ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
The only exception to this occurs when one has a weapon in his hands and he has personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as he puts it down, Rule 1 applies again.

RULE 2:
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY
You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

RULE 3:
KEEP YOUR DICKBEATERS OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

RULE 4:
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET
You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

These guys are fuckwits.

Like NoLa needs freaking ARMOR to roll around in the next time the levees fail... (I'm hoping for next week)

New Orleans isn't a problem, it's the people in charge and the idiots who elected them. I'm just wondering what happens in another situation, such as Katrina, if they have these new, high-powered weapons. I believe it would have made a bad situation worse, if that were possible, but that's just speculation. Mike would probably know better than most of us, as he saw what was happening.

I thought I was looking at an old clip from a blacksploitation movie there for a second...

I know that you probably avoid anything that even remotely smacks of politics like the plague, and would completely understand why you might send a two word reply to this comment, but I'll send it anyway.

For a long, long time now, many at LiveJournal, including people like myself who helped create it long ago, have been extremely frustrated at the management of the site, their policies, their occasional censorship, their weak response to the Russian government's prosecution of a LJer for leaving a comment suggesting that corrupt cops should be publically burned at the stake, etc.

Well, I've created an LJ community called [info]ljunited, where our goal is to form a large, centralized group of LJ members to fight that.

Specifically, our goal is to work towards defending and restoring the original promises made to LiveJournal's members by LiveJournal itself.

We want to stand up for the free speech of ALL of LiveJournal's members, restore LJ's original strong support for community-based Open Source Software development, and restore community participation in the successful operations of LiveJournal... because frankly, the people managing the site are also slowly killing it due to their poor policies.

The site is shrinking in activity about 1% a month currently, and it's within the management's power to do something about this trend, rather than contribute to it by further alienating its members.

In the past week or so, I have attracted about 150 fairly motivated people to help out. We're also working with helping candidates for the upcoming LJ advisory council elections who embrace our views.

We've endorsed [info]rm on LiveJournal, who is a very knowledgeable, thoughtful individual with a lot of persuasive oomph who has been on LJ forever. A talented writer, longtime LJ member, very knowledgeable, very talented individual.

We've also attracted several LJers in the Open Source community, who have their own issues relating to the open source side of LJ that need to be addressed, because LJ has turned its back on working with the open source community for its development over the years, shutting out needed improvements to the software. We want to make the case that they should reverse this policy.

Despite current crap Russian management at LJ's parent company SUP, we have some reasons for hope. Recently, they brought in someone who previously oversaw the internet development at ITV to be their general manager, so there seems to be some recognition that they need a bit of a change. Our job is to basically do a far better job in making the case for it, and to lay out where they're going wrong and what the better alternatives would be.

I'd be curious what your concerns are regarding LiveJournal and its future, because it's our goal to bring people into our group and have them positively effect our policies and ideas.

Sure, it would be a wonderful thing to have you join our community, to have your support for LJ United, its goals, and its candidate... but failing that, I invite you to find out more about us.
