New Orleans
Crys and I are headed to New Orleans tomorrow for a week or so. Looking forward to some good food, a lot of fun, and getting some practice dodging bullets (9 Shot As New Orleans Starts Mardi Gras).

I feel like I am missing something... I mean... I never get shot at. Dammit. Maybe I am living in the wrong city or something...

Sorry I'm going to miss you guys. This last minute move has taken up all of my time. We'll catch you two in Florida sometime soon.

Unless you plan on walking alone on dark streets or buying crack from teenaged blacks, you'll go home lead-free.

...because walking alone on dark streets is something no reasonable human being with an expectation of reasonable safety should ever want to do?

If the list of things to avoid in order to stay safe is going to be that arbitrary, I think "living in New Orleans" and "visiting New Orleans" should be on it.

My point is that as long as you don't do anything stupid you'll be fine, not unlike visiting ANY city with a crime problem. Then again, I don't know why I have to explain myself to someone who's obviously never visited or lived in New Orleans.

Right, because a violent crime rate 10 times higher than any other city in the country doesn't mean anything. You've just got to not do stupid things, like visit New Orleans.

A crime rate 10 times higher means: calculate the length of time yhou'd have to stay in the control city to get shot. Subtract one day to get the length of time you can expect to stay safely in the control city. Divide that number by ten to find the length of time you can expect to stay safely in New Orleans.

If the gun-toters of the Web are correct, then Paris is overrun by car-torching Muslims, and yet tourists come and go from there all the time. It's probably safe in the tourist areas, and also safe if you have a local contact who knows how to avoid danger.

It's an amazing thing when folks believe in the "bad side of town" falacy.

Yeah, I guess some folks also belive in the "bad part of the country" falacy too.

I've met a number of people in Europe who say they'll never visit the United States because they don't want to get shot.

I wonder why everyone's so nervous about visiting New Orleans, but I have so many friends who fly in and out of Mexico like it's nothing, even as half its population has pretty much fled into the US.
