Can we just arm everyone in New Orleans and just speed this process up?

You're right, there is no one shooting up malls in other American cities. And by the way that was last week's negative news you could have posted about New Orleans. Yesterday we got hit by a tornado. You're slipping. Yes New Orleans has a long way to go and is stumbling getting there, but all these problems existed before Katrina. It just took a hurricane for the nation to notice. I'm glad you are happier where you ended up, but there are plenty of us that wouldn't leave this town for anywhere else and have a positive outlook for the long run of things. Sorry, but New Orleans is going to be here for a while. Happy Valentines Day. Happy Mardi Gras.

Just quit whining about how we are not going to keep giving you more and more money. If you want to rebuild your landfill below the sea -pay for it yourselves.

The rest of the country is SICK of it.

>>You're right, there is no one shooting up malls in other American cities.<<

What's the point of this comment -- to equate the crime in New Orleans to the crime of other cities? Want to really ruin Mardi Gras? Show the unfudged crime statistics for the city. The fudged, published statistics already put it as the number one murder per capita city in North America.

You can bury your head in the sand, but don't expect others to join you. New Orleans is a shithole now. How many more rallies and funerals do you have to go to to wake up?

You need the National guard to police you? You keep on electing corrupt and worthless politicians.

Answer me this. Why did the nation have to notice? Because you're too fucking worthless to clean up the mess you made yourselves.

The historical backround of New Orleans has had its ups and downs, with no one person or source quantifying that it has always been a place that was at the mercy of its geography, fluctuations in the economy, and that a percentage of it's denizens where prone to criminal enterprise and violence.

You know, [info]interdictor, we'd all take your comments about New Orleans a lot more seriously if you ever:

* Lived in New Orleans
* Had a job and paid taxes in New Orleans
* Tried to run a business in New Orleans
* Were in New Orleans during any natural disaster
* Were in a hurricane
* Were in Katrina in New Orleans
* Saw the reconstruction/aid efforts after Katrina
* Were involved in any of the reconstruction/aid, such as providing communications services, reporting, etc. during or after Katrina
* Commented online or in the news media about the situation
* Rationally chose to leave the city before the current chapter

Still, you have to question a man who after all this, moves to a city owned and controlled by Scientology.

I'd choose New Orleans over Clearwater any day, or anywhere else in Florida for that matter.

seems like our outlook on new orleans would be entirely different if we weren't overwhelmed with dumping money into iraq.

but yeah. i don't see a lot of joy coming out of NO in the near future.

maybe if they market it as an adventure vacation, where you can pit your self-defense skills against the criminals and gangsters, with the reward of listening to great music and eating beignets.

Nawlins today is DC 20 years ago when crack swept through town. We used to be the Death Capital, onceuponatime. Boy, those were the days... And while N.O. might have the per-capital rate sewn-up for now, it'll never be Detroit. Hustlers from Detroit come down to N.O. to chill out for a weekend, not the other way around.

The problem with N.O. today is that there's just too many black people there. If it was Miami or L.A., or any place where whitey likes to go to spend money (save for Mardi Gras, it ain't happenin').

Note: If you're reading this, you've GOT to check out the latest episode of Top Gear. They did a road trip from Miami to New Orleans... Lots of footage from 1 year after Katrina, and Clarkson and the guys basically get run outta' town (more than once).

Finished?

Nah. Geographically, New Orleans is too vitally important for shipping routes, national security, etc, to be completely finished. Not now, and not ever, really.

But New Orleans is in for some rought years ahead. Several years, maybe several decades. She's swung through bouts of urban blight and renewal before, she will again, and anyone living her right now knows this. We've all chosen to be here, at this point. We're aware of the dangers and we still love the city enough to keep going.

Maybe there aren't enough of us to fix everything. Maybe there aren't enough of us to get the city back to where she was, or to where she could be. But there's enough of us to keep her afloat.

I'm here for the long haul, anyway.

i'm not sure that new orleans is finished at all. jaenanda is correct. new orleans has been through it's ups and downs. when my mama was in college it was scary as hell, huge murder rate, etc. when i was there in high school in the mid to late 80's it was much safer and cleaner. then by the time i left after college it was getting bad
